You sat on the park bench on a sunny late afternoon, your face in your hands. It was one of those days: your good teacher had to leave and a substitute just had to toughen up, knowing the kids knew subs weren’t tough enough to handle a class; your friends had decided to become fair-weather ones; the school bully just had to notice you; your boyfriend had decided to dump you/your longtime crush had turned you down; and you were given a ton of homework. You felt utterly useless right now. You didn’t know why, but you just felt like having a crying spell. Could be PMS, you thought.

Suddenly, you heard a little ‘piyo~’ next to you. Glancing up, you saw the cutest little yellow chick on your thighs. It looked up at you like a dog, wondering what’s on your mind, and what in heaven made you cry like that.

"Ah, hello," you rasped, flustered to have been found in such and embarrassing state.

"Piyo," it chirped.

You extended your hand for it to explore, and it hopped op to your palm. Slowly you raised the bird up to your face for a closer look. It shook itself cutely, ruffling its yellow feathers, and you giggled.

"You’re so cute~" you squeaked, and it chirped happily in reply. It seemed happy to know it made you happy. It flew out of your palm, only to perch on your shoulder to nuzzle your neck.

You smiled, leaning back. The bird flew around you to nestle in places—your hair, on the top of your head, your other shoulder, your lap, in your cupped hands. It snuggled finally in your warm palms. You giggled, stroking its head with your thumb as it attempted to take a nap in your hands. You, meanwhile, leaned back on the backrest, and thought about other things as you watched the sky darken progressively. Eventually, it was dark enough for the lamp posts to be lit, and you gently shook the bird awake. It chirped groggily, but flapped its wings. You chuckled, and kissed the top of its head.

"Thank you, you murmured, staring at it with grateful (e/c) eyes, "for being there when no one was."

It chirped happily, pecking your nose in a form of kiss. You nuzzled it to your cheek, and it pressed back against your skin.

"Yo, dude!" someone familiar called, and you saw Alfred, a friend of yours.

"What do you want, Alfred?" you asked quite crossly; he was one of the first to leave you today, after all.

"Look, I’m really, really sorry for leaving you today! It’s just that the other guys really don’t understand ‘I really can’t go and I’m sorry’ but they just pulled me along and I just couldn’t bring myself to—"

You shook his shoulders, the little bird flying out of your hands. "Alfred!" you snapped, but smiled at him. "It’s alright."

He blinked at you through his glasses, but sighed in relief. "Whew! Am I glad to hear that, (y/n)!" He pulled you into a hug.

"G-gah!" you gasped. "Alfie…can’t…breathe!"

He laughed, releasing you. "I’m glad you still like me, (y/n)!"

You mock-slapped his upper arm, and he rubbed it comically. "Why ever would I dislike such a nut like you?" You smiled at him, and he smiled back.

"Well, I guess I’ll see you," he said suddenly. "I just saw you while walking and I just…"

"Nah, go ahead," you shrugged. "I’m all by my lonesome, anyway."

"…You sure?"

"Yeah." You smiled and waved as he walked off. That American was a really nice friend, just a little dense sometimes, you remembered.

But before you could pet the bird, sitting down, someone had called your attention, and you looked up to see Ludwig, one of the pilot class.

"Oh, hey Lud," you greeted. "What brings you to the park so late?"

"Er, I was just walking my dogs," he replied, and three canines peered out from behind him. One came up to sniff your hand, and, with a look and an approving nod from Ludwig, you pet the dog’s head. Another sniffed your pants, and the third sniffed the bird on your shoulder, who in turn hopped onto the dog’s head.

"Oh, that’s my brother’s bird," he commented.

"Really?"

"Ja. He said Gilbird was missing today and didn’t know where he’d flown off to." He took out a flashy iPhone 5, its crystalline case the German flag, and started texting. "He’ll be here in a minute; he’s looking for Gilbird on the other side of town."

"Oh, so this is the awesome little bird he’s been talking about all week," you replied, tickling Gilbird’s neck. "Typical Gilbert," you said, grinning up at the blonde.

He seemed to flush before chuckling. "I guess I’ll wait for him here; he didn’t take the car and the dogs have finished their walk, anyway."

You smiled and pat the seat next to you. "Have a seat; I’m pretty sure Gil’ll be a while."

Danke," he replied, and sat down. "So, I heard you were given a ton of homework today."

You groaned, slapping your face. "I totally forgot all about that!" you hissed. All because of Gilbird!

"Don’t worry; I can help." He only smiled, holding out a hand. "Where do you want to start?"

You were stunned. A star student, offering to help you?

"Er, Chemistry," you replied, pulling out a notebook and flipping your book to the right page as the dogs sat down beside Ludwig. "Who in heaven knew stoichiometry was the hardest thing?"

He chuckled. "Once you understand that the equation needs to be balanced, it’s pretty easy," he said. "See here…."

Lecture continued on, and you were finally understanding homework. This guy actually taught, unlike some of the subs; your Chem teacher was away most of the time attenting seminars, but whenever she taught, she was the greatest teacher.

Then suddenly—

"Gilbird!" someone called frantically, and before you could blink, they had launched themselves in your arms. The head looked up at you and grinned stupidly before you pushed him away in your shock.

"What…?"

"Gilbird! Gilbert called, and the little yellow puffball circled the albino’s head happily. "Oh, Gilbird, you bad bird! I’ve been looking for you since school let out and I went home! I’ve been worried sick!" he called out anxiously, kissing his little pet. You giggled at the cute reunion, and that seemed to break him out of his thoughts.

"(y/n)?" he said, eyes widening. "You…you found Gilbird?"

"Gilbird found me, actually," you replied, smiling as the bird pecked your cheek. You rubbed your arm, looking away as you blushed. "I didn’t know you had a pet bird."

"Kese! He’s the awesomest bird the world’s ever seen!" he replied. "But it was unawesome of you to fly off like that, Gilbird!"

The bird chirped sadly, head down as he settled in your cupped hands.

"Aw, don’t blame poor Gilbird," you replied, stroking the little yellow head. "He must’ve been so alone in that home of yours, without his awesome master~"

He seemed saddened for a moment, but smirked again, sweeping the bird out of your hands with his. "I promise you’ll never have to be alone anymore, my awesome pet!" he proclaimed. "You’ll come with me to school every day from now on!"

You giggled as the bird chirped happily. Suddenly, Gil looked at you.

"And it’s not just because you’ll be alone at home."

You stopped laughing, choking on one as you stared at him with wide eyes.

"West, could you excuse us?" The blonde only needed to look at his other brother to understand, and the German left. Ludwig smiled at you, saying he’ll see you tomorrow, and after your word of thanks, he rounded up Aster, Blackie and Berlitz to head home. You didn’t question Gilbert, only because you knew that, whatever he was doing, he knew full well what it was.

"You didn’t have to send him home, you know," you murmured.

"I know," he replied, and sat next to you. "But I have to thank you for finding awesome Gilbird here." Gilbird chirped happily, and you both chuckled, him letting out a pretty normal one other people do.

You shrugged. "It was nothing."

He stared at you. "I wasn’t just anything."

You stared at him with widened eyes before he pressed his lips to yours. It was just a light peck, but it was something. He pulled away to stare at you, ad you couldn’t help lifting a finger to your lips. Was it real? Or a dream? Whatever that was, you’d treasure it.

Gilbert may well be an arrogant egotistical ass, but you knew him to be truly awesome at some times. Like now.

Though that wasn’t the only thing you knew, you also heard that Eliza had dumped him for someone else: Roderich Edelstein. You couldn’t help thinking that the Austrian wasn’t so bad, but why go for someone less awesome than Mr. Awesome himself? That broke Gilbert’s heart anyway, and you only felt as sorry and sad as you were just after lunch, right up to this moment.

"(y/n)," he murmured, "will you be my awesome frau?"

This shocked you to no end, but you pulled him close, anyway. "Of course I will, you idiot."

He grinned, wrapping his own arms around you. "How about I walk you home, huh?"

You smiled back as you pulled away, and he offered to take your bag as he laced his fingers through yours. You leaned your head on his shoulder, and he kissed your hair lightly.

~~

"So was that was how you got together?"

"We-ell," you mused, "yeah, I guess." You slid the ring back onto your finger, smiling at the text engraved inside the band you just read for the umpteenth time.

"If you had to, say, summarize all this, what would you say?"

You glanced up at the albino, whose arm was linked with yours, smiled, then glanced at the little bird that settled in your warm palms before looking up.

"Let’s just say it was because of a little bird."
